The poltergeist phenomena is perhaps one of the most studied and least understood of all paranormal phenomena. As it relates to ghost study, there are differing opinions as to whether or not a poltergeist is related to ghostly activity at all.
Firstly, let’s begin with a definition. The term poltergeist is a compound of the German verb polter – ‘to make a noise by knocking or tumbling about, to knock or rattle, to scold or blister’. The noun geist is ghost .
Poltergeist hauntings have been blamed for many violent or destructive activity. Past researchers were of the philosophy that these types of activities were the work of spirits or unknown forces.
Today though many investigators are starting to find that these activities are caused by entities closer to the environment being investigated.
Many reports of poltergeist involve simple knocking noises, objects or furniture movement, slamming or opening doors, unexplained light fixtures turning on or off, and fires with no explained cause breaking out just to name a few known examples.
It is believed that adolescent girls (possibly emotionally troubled) are connected to this phenomenon. It is believed that she unknowningly becomes the conduit during a period of emotional or sexual concerns.
Confusingly these hauntings can be ghostly or they can be of a very controversial ideology today that there is some form of psychokinesis.
This theory holds that the unknowing female, young male, or in some cases adult can move objects by the power in their brain. Even though this field of study remains greatly unexplained some scientist are starting to explore the possibility that more research needs to be conducted to understand the true causes.
The best way to know for sure what is actually happening is to document and watch for a period of time to see the various forms of activity are taking place. Who is present when the activity is happening, and what their mental and emotional state is during the occurrences.
Detailed documentation of the facts and events that take place will help investigators and researchers understand what is behind these poltergeist hauntings.
